Wine. Claret. Burgundy.
All beverages made from purple grapes, yes, but also THE color for Fall 2017.
I took a fashion design class many years ago and was intrigued at the deconstructive inspiration technique we were taught. Apparently couture designers collect items of inspiration from all sorts of sources, and then consider how to fashion them into wearable shapes. Which makes me wonder how we end up with THE single color of the season. Maybe designers really have a secret pre-season meeting that goes something like this: "We haven't had any olive green for a while, that would be a good one for fall 2017." "No, no, we had olive accents in 2015. It's burgundy's turn to inspire us." ?!
On Trend for Fall 2017
However it has come about, a casual stroll through the mall this week highlighted that burgundy is definitely on trend for fall 2017. Nearly every store had some version of it, even for men. What surprised me a little bit is that we are still in the fall transition season, even in retail land. And yet, most of what was shown was very decidedly dark.
I'll apologize now for the poor quality of these photographs. Apparently I am not one of the iPhone 6 users capable of taking those breathtaking images I've seen on billboards!
How to Use Burgundy to Transition Into Fall
I don't know about you, but I'm not quite ready to embrace the dark, rich colors of fall and winter yet. So I found a few items that would pair well with the burgundy to make the transition a little easier.
I love these pieces as a way to ease into fall. How about combining all your spring millennial pink with burgundy (top right)? That's cute! And a sleeveless burgundy shell would be smashing with these striped, high-waisted trousers. Add a long gold pendant and a jacket if necessary and you'd be good to go at least through October. The dress isn't burgundy per se, but I think a burgundy blazer or sweater would compliment this quite nicely while easing you into fall without too much end-of-summer angst.
Even Accessories are Burgundy
Don't forget the accessories; the easiest way to embrace what is clearly this season's color trend. Even suitcases!
Burgundy for Men Too
It seems that even the men in our lives can't escape the claret trend. Keeping in mind that I don't frequent stores catering to the male gender, I still managed to notice these:
When Burgundy is Not Your Color
I found a few things that don't even nod in the claret direction that are still worthy of a strong fall transition wardrobe. In fact, I'm wondering why I didn't just buy these while on my walkabout the other day. Check out that great beaded fringe on the hem of the trousers! Definitely more my style than the shredded hems that the denim brands are selling this season.
Thank you Pentagon City Fashion Center for taking all the angst out of what I need to add to my fall 2017 wardrobe. Clearly I can't call myself stylish without adding some burgundy, claret, or wine to my wardrobe. So I did. I found this burgundy and black wool/cashmere poncho at my local Costco for just $19.99. I'd run, not walk to your Costco if I were you! And then you can enjoy a glass of wine knowing that you've got something on trend for Fall 2017.
